Planning the PEX Water-Line Layout
The installation begins with a coordinated layout for the fixtures, supply routes, and shutoffs. Compatible tubing, expansion rings, and fittings are selected as part of one approved potable-water system.
Explore how PEX water lines are planned and installed in a luxury home. Ten illustrated stages show protected routes, supported bends, expansion connections, distribution manifolds, insulation, testing, and final fixture checks.

The installation begins with a coordinated layout for the fixtures, supply routes, and shutoffs. Compatible tubing, expansion rings, and fittings are selected as part of one approved potable-water system.
The planned routes pass through carefully located openings in sound framing. Protective sleeves help separate the tubing from rough edges at the illustrated penetrations.
The flexible water lines follow smooth bends and are secured with supports suited to the tubing. Routing allows for movement and avoids sharp folds, strain, and contact with damaging surfaces.
This gallery illustrates a PEX-a cold-expansion connection system. Matching tubing, reinforcing rings, and fittings form the joint, with seating reviewed according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Where the design uses manifolds, separate hot and cold distribution points organize the fixture branches. Accessible shutoffs allow individual branches to be identified and controlled.
The fixture outlets are anchored to solid blocking, with hot and cold lines kept separate. Capped connections protect the unfinished outlets until the fixtures are ready to be connected.
Required insulation is fitted to the hot-water route, and exposed piping is reviewed for protection before closure. The image shows the insulation being completed around the installed line.
The affected water lines are tested while the work remains accessible. Joints, connections, and test closures are reviewed, and required rough inspection is coordinated before concealment.
The prepared water lines connect to accessible fixture shutoffs and suitable supply connectors. The hot and cold supplies are checked for correct operation and visible leakage.
Complete the required PEX filling and flushing sequence, provide the California fixture notices, and explain the system’s shutoffs and care requirements to the homeowner. Fixture operation and visible connections receive their final checks.
