Assessing the Existing Supply Lines
The existing hot and cold lines are traced and reviewed for condition, access, and connection points. Replacement routes are coordinated with the fixtures and the finished spaces around them.
Follow the replacement of worn hot and cold water lines in a finished home. Ten illustrated stages cover isolation, separate replacement routes, hot-water insulation, pressure checks, and fixture reconnection.

The existing hot and cold lines are traced and reviewed for condition, access, and connection points. Replacement routes are coordinated with the fixtures and the finished spaces around them.
The affected water supply is shut off before the old lines are opened. Pressure is relieved and the lines are drained as needed, with the service interruption coordinated for the household.
Worn piping is disconnected and removed through the planned access areas. Remaining connection points are prepared for the replacement lines, while removed pieces are collected clear of finished surfaces.
The new cold-water line follows the planned route to the affected fixtures. Supports hold the pipe securely, and protected framing penetrations reduce the risk of damage when finishes are restored.
The hot-water line is routed independently of the cold supply. Compatible joints and supports are installed while the piping remains accessible for checks and the required insulation work.
Replacement branches terminate at stable connection points for the fixtures. The hot and cold outlets remain separate and temporarily capped until the fixture connections are ready.
Required insulation is fitted around the hot-water piping. This view shows the work in progress: seams, fittings, and remaining exposed sections are completed as required before concealment.
A gauge is connected to an isolated test segment as part of the required pressure checks. The affected piping and joints remain accessible for testing and rough inspection before wall closure.
After the required concealed-work checks and finish coordination, the fixture connects to its new hot and cold supplies. Accessible shutoffs and gently routed connectors keep the connections serviceable.
The affected piping is flushed according to the applicable requirements, and fixture delivery and hot-and-cold operation are checked. Remaining adjustments and required final inspection complete the work.
